Woman suffers serious injures in wellness check by Nanaimo RCMP; IIO investigates

NANAIMO (NEWS 1130) — The Independent Investigations Office is investigating a police wellness check which led to injuries, and is asking anyone who may have seen or recorded the incident for help.

Chief Civilian Director of the IIO, Ron MacDonald says on May 26, Nanaimo RCMP police officers apprehended the woman under the Mental Health Act and took her to hospital

“They did apprehend her and took her to the hospital. And then subsequently learned that she may have suffered some injuries during that encounter with the police,” he says.

The alleged injuries sustained by the woman in her 40s, prompted the IIO to look into the actions of the police.

This comes in a time where protests around the world are critical of police being the ones sent to deal with people in mental distress.

“It is a good discussion that we’re having currently around these issues. And that may lead to some change in procedures in the future,” MacDonald says.

Anyone who saw or recorded the incident is being asked to contact the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477.
