Man in Richmond receives city’s first ticket for breaking physical distancing rules

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) — It’s preferred education, rather than enforcement since the pandemic began, but the City of Richmond says it has handed out its first ticket to someone not following physical distancing rules while playing basketball.

The man who got the ticket, which could be as much as $175, had been warned numerous times before.

“Because of the history of refusing to adhere to request to comply to change the behaviour — we ultimately issued a ticket.” Clay Adams, with the City of Richmond says.

He adds the tickets are a last resort but this case is different since the man was dismissive.

“Like the people who we’ve encountered a few times previously, continue to ignore requests to adhere to the rules of not playing an organized basketball game, and ultimately we took a big step and issued them a fine,” he says.

Adams says he hopes this is the last time the ticket will be issued and people start to understand the need to be socially distant and respect the rules and guidelines,

“Pay attention, listen to what you’re told, and respect the safety. And respect the well being of other people as well,” Adams advises.
