The BC NDP is calling on Liberal MLA Laurie Throness to resign as advertises in an 'anti-LGBTQ' publication

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The BC NDP is calling on the Liberals to take “strong and swift action” with an MLA who is advertising in a publication that supports homophobic and transphobic ideologies.

This comes weeks after Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson said it wouldn’t happen again.

Spencer Chandra Herbert says with Liberal MLA Laurie Throness refusing to stop placing ads in Light Magazine even after the party said it would, it’s time for Leader Andrew Wilkinson to act.

“The leader of the Liberal party which says it’s a party that’s against homophobia and transphobia, he actually has to live that and he’s not,” he says. “You can’t claim there’s no room and then make room for views that support homophobic values.”

Chandra Herbert says Throness has been clear that he supports conversion therapy while also setting policy for children and youth for the Liberal party.

“He was going to continue to advertise in this magazine and that in fact he essentially supports its values that conversion therapy, for example, was okay as long as it didn’t involve coercion or kidnapping,” he says. “This MLA is the critic for children and families, the one that develops policy on childcare and on how we treat young people. So if Andrew Wilkinson wants to follow up his words and actually act he would remove this man from this position.”

Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson confirmed there is no place for intolerance in his party but hasn’t said if any action will be taken.
