WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Travellers trying to get to Vancouver Island for the weekend can expect multiple sailing waits Friday at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal.
“We just want to let customers know, if you are travelling without a reservation and you’re not a resident of one of the communities we’re going to, you can expect multiple sailing waits,” said Deborah Marshall, with BC Ferries.
She added the delays for travellers are due to a ministerial order which requires BC Ferries to give priority to local residents travelling to their homes.
It’s a busy weekend for travel on the coast.
Booking in advance is strongly recommended. Customers without a booking may experience multiple sailing waits. If your schedule is flexible, travel at less busy times.

Marshall anticipates continued waits for travellers throughout the weekend, as BC Ferries hasn’t been able to add extra sailings this summer due to COVID-19.
She advises travellers to avoid peak times and check conditions on the BC Ferries website before heading out.
“You know our traffic is still down about 30 per ent due to the COVID pandemic, but we also haven’t be able to put on as many extra sailings because we weren’t able to hire the summer staff that we normally do,” she said.
