Abbotsford police officer not expected to survive after intervening in Nelson altercation

NELSON (NEWS 1130) — An off-duty Abbotsford police officer is on life support and not expected to live after intervening in a disturbance in Nelson Thursday.

The Abbotsford Police Department says Const. Allan Young is not expected to survive his injuries from the altercation.

“Allan treated everyone with kindness and respect. He always had time for a laugh and a joke. Everyone that met Allan would walk away happier,” reads a statement from Abbotsford police.
“Allan was never too busy for his friends and family and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to help. Allan had a zest for life that was unparalleled with a dedication and passion for policing and the Abbotsford Police Department. He will be missed.”
Nelson police say the 55-year-old officer approached a person who was causing a disturbance, and a physical altercation ensued.
A 26-year-old man has been arrested, and the RCMP Major Crimes Unit is investigating alongside Nelson police.
