Four in glacier bus crash remain in critical, but stable condition, rock slide not to blame

COLUMBIA ICEFIELD, Alta. (NEWS 1130) — Four people remain in critical condition after an off-road tour bus slid 50 metres down an embankment Saturday in the Columbia Ice Field between Banff and Jasper, killing three people and sending 24 to hospital.

Alberta RCMP confirmed Monday the four are in critical, but stable condition.

More details are now known about those who died in the crash: a 24-year-old female from Canoe Narrows, Sask.; a 28-year-old female from Edmonton; and a 58-year-old male from India.

Next of kin have been notified, according to a release from RCMP.

The names of the deceased will not be released.

RCMP continues to investigate the crash. No cause has been determined.

“However, the RCMP collision reconstructionist is able to confirm that there is no evidence that a rock slide precipitated the incident,” RCMP says.

Efforts remain underway to remove the Ice Explorer vehicle for further inspection, but could take several days.

“Again, safety is our paramount issue right now, for all parties concerned and the recovery of the vehicle,” said Jasper RCMP Comm. Rick Badesi. “The location is remote and we are requiring assistance from additional resources, at this time.”

In all, 27 people were aboard when the bus rolled over. Initially, Alberta Health Services reported, of the 24 survivors, 14 had life-threatening head or pelvis injuries. Five others were in serious condition with broken bones and the remaining five suffered minor injuries.
