Large earthquake strikes west of Tofino hours after massive shaker near Alaska

TOFINO (NEWS 1130) – A large earthquake has been detected off the the coast of Vancouver Island, 250 kilometres west of Tofino.
The 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.
There are no reports of damage and there is no tsunami threat.

Wednesday morning’s tremblor hit hours after a massive earthquake hit off the coast of Alaska just after 10:00 p.m. Tuesday.

That quake measured at a magnitude 7.8, striking off the Alaska Peninsula and prompting a tsunami warning. However, the result was only a wave of less than a foot high.

However, because of the quake’s location, nearby communities along the Alaska Peninsula did not experience shaking that would normally be associated with that magnitude of a quake, according to Michael West, Alaska State Seismologist.
There were no reports of damage related to the earthquake on Tuesday, and no reports of injuries.
