An elderly couple who lived in the basement of the home died, Surrey Fire confirms

It's unclear what caused the fire

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – An elderly couple has died in a house fire in Surrey’s Bridgeview neighbourhood.

Crews were called to the area of 125B Street south of Old Yale Road early Thursday morning.

“When they arrived they had a fully-involved home,” Surrey Assistance Fire Chief Steve Serbic explains.

Fire crews were told by a neighbour that two people lived in the home. Firefighters were able to attack the fire and find two elderly people “very quickly,”however, Serbic says they were both deceased by the time they were pulled out.

The RCMP will be leading the investigation into what happened, Serbic says, adding fire investigators have been called in.

“The call was a third alarm call,” he explains. “The property itself is extremely challenging because there’s a lot of debris, so it was a really challenging fire to get to. There was a lot of stuff in the front yard and throughout the home.”

No one else was hurt in the fire.

Several fire trucks and police cruisers remain on scene.

White smoke could be seen drifting through the heavily wooded area, and was also visible from a distance.

Crews have not confirmed the extent of the damage to the house, however, it appears to be quite severe.

There’s currently no word on what caused this fire.
