‘Small, mighty’ rescued seal pup named after Dr. Bonnie Henry

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The latest seal pup to be rescued by the Ocean Wise Marine Mammal Rescue Centre has been named in tribute to B.C.’s favourite doctor.

‘Dr. Bonnie Herring’ was rescued Aug. 8 after a Vancouver Drydock worker who had been observing the pup for eight hours called in.

“The team received photos and was dispatched to respond as it was clear the young pup was underweight, dehydrated and in need of intervention,” reads a release from the centre.

She was only 6.4 kg when she arrived, well below the normal birth weight for a harbor seal pup of 10 to 12 kg.

“Small and mighty! She may be tiny but Bonnie is doing great and progressing really well,” reads an update from the centre.

She’s since put on a little weight and appears to be doing well as she remains in quarantine for at least 14 days (but not because of COVID-19).

“She has gained over 1 kg in the past week and is enjoying her daily swims. She’s mighty and fierce, just like the real Dr. Bonnie Henry!” said manager Lindsaye Akhurst.

“We had a unique opportunity to thank Dr. Bonnie Henry for her incredible work. With her guidance and help, B.C. has been able to resume important work like our Rescue Centre, so we’re extra grateful that we can celebrate Dr. Henry this way.”
