ALDERGROVE (NEWS 1130) — A woman living in Pioneer Park in Aldergrove says she was stunned to see a fence going up on the American side of the border along Zero Avenue.
The Canada-U.S. border is the longest undefended border in the world, and it seems Americans have been setting up a cable fence in the Abbotsford and Aldergrove area.
“They’re putting up a fence. They’re putting up a fence on Canada’s border with the U.S.” It’s what @NEWS1130 is hearing from Julie Shuker, who lives in Pioneer Park, near 0 Ave. She says workers started putting up the fence yesterday. We’ve reached out to @canborder for comment.

Julie Shuker says she first spotted the workers putting up posts on the American side of the border Tuesday.
Shuker says she also saw a strange discussion around the same time.
“I did see a police officer having a conversation with a construction worker, and it looked pretty heated,” she tells NEWS 1130.
The stretch of the border has become controversial since people from both sides had been meeting up there during the pandemic.
“I don’t like the fact we’re putting up fences,” Shuker says. “I understand that we live in dangerous times, and this is unprecedented. To me, [the fence] is a major piece of our relationship with the United States that’s going to be irrevocably changed.”
The Canada-U.S. border has been closed to non-essential travel until Sept. 21.
Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair’s office and U.S. Border Patrol have since confirmed with NEWS 1130 safety cable barriers are being installed in the area to help stop people from crossing over.
