Court date delayed for man accused of threatening PM, storming Rideau Hall

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) — There has been another court delay for the man accused of arming himself and storming Rideau Hall last month.

In a brief, virtual court hearing, 46-year-old Corey Hurren had his case was delayed, again. His next court date is set for Sept. 18, when proceedings on bail and potentially a plea on the 22 charges against him are expected.

Hurren, a member of the Canadian Rangers in Manitoba, is accused of ramming his truck through the gates of Rideau Hall on July 2. He had four firearms with him and was heavily armed with ammunition, according to court documents. Police add one of the guns had an illegal magazine.

He then allegedly walked through the grounds in search of the prime minister, whose official residence is on the grounds along with the governor general’s.

Neither of them were on the property at the time.

Police say they were able to talk Hurren down and arrested him after about 90 minutes.

Prior to this, Hurren’s social media accounts posted COVID-19 conspiracy theories and he noted the pandemic was taking a toll on his sausage-making business.

CBC reports the military is conducted an internal review to determine in Hurren was on the radar of their intelligence units or whether concerns were raised.

None of the charges against him have been proved in court.
