LILLOOET (NEWS 1130) — A 10-year-old boy is lucky he wasn’t badly injured after he was attacked by a cougar northwest of Lillooet on Monday.

The Conservation Officer Service says two women, four children and their Border Collie were walking along a trail near Marshall Lake, when a cougar dropped out of a tree and swiped at the boy, knocking him down, scratching his back and chest.

That’s when the dog leapt into action, jumping on the cougar’s back while the rest of the group threw sticks and rocks, and screamed.

The cougar took off, and a nearby road worker helped give the boy first aid.

Conservation officers are now trying to find the cougar, with the help of hounds.

The boy was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Conservation Officers say while cougar attacks are rare, they are urging anyone venturing into the backcountry to be prepared in case of any wildlife encounters.
