B.C. records 2nd highest single-day COVID-19 case total ahead of long weekend

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) — The province recorded the second highest single-day total of new COVID-19 cases on Friday with 121, ahead of the last long weekend of the summer.

Health officials also reported another death, bringing the total in B.C. to 211, while declaring an outbreak at KinVillage, a care home in the Fraser Health region.

The new cases are just shy of the record of 124, set late last month, and follow a day when health officials said B.C. is at a critical point in bending the pandemic curve back down as cases have surged since the July 1 long weekend.

“COVID-19 continues to affect our province and this long weekend is no different. Whether you’re celebrating the Canucks game tonight or meeting friends for a barbecue or camping, let’s make it a safe, small-group long weekend,” says a statement from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie and Health Minister Adrian Dix.

“Get outside this weekend and enjoy your time with friends and family and outdoor activities, while protecting the more vulnerable around you. We must maintain a very careful balance between fun and caution this long weekend and onwards to the fall.”

The new cases bring the total in B.C. to 6,162 overall.

Of the 1,233 active cases, 31 people remain in hospital, down three, while 12 are in intensive care.

Outbreaks are now active at 10 long-term care or assisted-living facilities, as well as two acute-care wards.

“We made it 170 days COVID-free,” says an update on the KinVillage website. “Unfortunately we learned today that a staff member in our assisted living residence has tested positive.”

No other outbreaks were reported, but case totals increased in every health region in the province.

Cases by health region since the start of the pandemic: 2,077 in Vancouver Coastal; 3,201 in Fraser; 180 in Island; 451 in Interior; 174 in Northern; and 79 people who reside outside of Canada.
