Abbotsford police officer shoots theft suspect after being pepper-sprayed, assaulted at Cabela’s

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) — After being called to reports of a “theft in progress” at an Abbotsford Cabela’s, an officer shot a suspect who allegedly pepper sprayed and assaulted her.
Both the officer and the suspect are in hospital
Police were called to the outdoor store on McCallum Road near Marshall Road just before 3: 30 p.m.
“Two suspects exited the store and were challenged by the responding Abbotsford Police Officer. One suspect fled, the other suspect pepper sprayed the officer and then ran from the area, moments later that same suspect returned and sprayed the officer again and began physically assaulting that officer; at this point the officer discharged their firearm striking the suspect.,” reads a release from the Abbotsford Police Department.

According to BC Emergency Health Services, one person was airlifted to hospital in critical condition. Another was taken to hospital by ambulance in serious condition.
Police in Abbotsford are asking people to avoid the area.
The Independent Investigations Office has been called in to investigate the incident, as they are whenever an officer shoots or seriously injures someone.
