Canucks’ Hughes up for NHL top rookie award

SPORTSNET — The Canucks season may be over, but the accolades could still be coming in for one of Vancouver’s players.

Quinn Hughes will find out Monday afternoon if he will win the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie.

“The Canucks blueliner impressed in his first full season, leading all rookies in scoring with 53 points. But he has some stiff competition for the award. Blackhawks forward Dominik Kubalik led all rookie in goals, while Avalanche defensemen Cale Makar was dominant in Colorado, averaging nearly a point a game,” says Adam Forsythe, News1130 sports anchor.

“Most pundits believe it’s Makar’s Trophy to lose, but Hughes likely gave voters some pause, as he looks to become the second straight Canucks to win the Award after Elias Pettersson did so last season”

Hughes also set a playoff record for most points by a rookie defenseman, with 16 in 17 games.

Canuck forward Brock Boeser was nominated for the top rookie award in 2018, finishing as the runner-up.

The NHL Awards show normally is held in Las Vegas in June, but this year will feature a socially distant ceremony, with nominees checking in over Zoom.

The awards begin at 3:30 p.m. Monday and you can watch on Sportsnet.

Along with the Calder, the NHL will give out the Hart, Norris, Lindsay and Vezina trophies.
