Preliminary engineering work has been done with the City of Pitt Meadows, public consultation to start in fall

PITT MEADOWS (NEWS 1130) — The province has completed concept plans to improve congestion at one of the busiest intersections in Pitt Meadows.

Initial planning work has been completed for improvements to Lougheed Highway at Harris Road — a trouble spot for commuters, during peak periods in particular.

“I am pleased our government is taking steps to address the challenges at Harris Road and Lougheed so motorists can get home safely,” Lisa Beare, MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, says in a release issued Monday, a day after Minister of Transportation Claire Trevena announced she won’t be seeking re-election.

“These improvements will also improve congestion so people can get home quicker to spend time with their families,” Beare added.

Further details about the plans were not released. However, preliminary engineering work has been done with the City of Pitt Meadows, resulting in an option for improvements to make the intersection safer, as well as more accessible for nearby businesses, according to the province.

The ministry is collaborating with the Katzie First Nation on plans for improvements to Lougheed Highway and will next seek public input on the preliminary concept in the fall.

“The public consultation will seek input on what people in Pitt Meadows and area envision as a long-term improvement at this major intersection. This feedback will help ensure that any preliminary upgrades are compatible with the long-term improvements envisioned for this area,” Beare says of the highway.

The ministry has also had discussions with the city about longer-term improvements to the intersection to support future growth and development in the area. Those discussions have involved a new interchange or overpasses in the area.

The city is currently engaged in discussions with the federal government and Vancouver Fraser Port Authority regarding an underpass at the CP Rail tracks on Harris Road., as well as a potential overpass at Kennedy Road, near the intermodal yard there.

In 2017, the province announced $70 million in improvements for Lougheed Highway through Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and Mission. That included an extended eastbound right turn lane leading up to Harris Rd. in Pitt Meadows.
