Ten-foot plastic slide worth about $6,000 stolen from Burnaby playground

Kids can’t go on part of a Burnaby playground. Why? Because its slide has been stolen. Burnaby RCMP are investigating while asking themselves “who steals a slide?” Ashley Burr has the story.

BURNABY (CityNews) — A slide worth an estimated $6,000 was stolen from a Burnaby playground.

Police believe the blue plastic slide was stolen sometime over the last three weeks from a South Burnaby playground near Rumble St. and Patterson Ave.

And the bizarre crime has even gotten the Burnaby RCMP wondering, “who steals a slide?”

“I’ve been in Burnaby for 13 years and never dealt with a slide theft,” Cpl. Mike Kalanj tells CityNews.

Kalanj says getting the slide in and out of the area, would have also been quite the ordeal.

“Unless you were able to unlock a fence and get a truck into the playground you would have to carry a 10 foot slide a city block to get it to a pretty large truck to get it away.”

But since the slide is worth thousands of dollars it means whoever stole it could face some significant repercussions.

“Theft over [5,000] would be an indictable offence which means you could face up to 10 years in prison under $5,000 the max is six months,” Kalanj says.

The area has been taped off because of the danger and falling hazard it now poses to kids.

Melany Bautista is a parent in the neighbourhood and says they are still scratching their heads thinking about why someone would want to steal a slide.

“Typically, it’s a great tightknit community so if anyone knows where our slide might be, let us know so our kids can have a slide back,” she says.

Police are looking for any witnesses or footage that could lead them to the slide’s location.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999. If you would like to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
