Rides, screams and costumes at PNE for Halloween, but no haunted houses

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Halloween at the PNE may not be as scary this year as in the past, but it will offer nights full of screams, and a few treats.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the PNE will not open its haunted houses, as they’re not friendly for physical distancing.

However, 20 rides will be open — including The Beast, Wooden Roller Coaster, Atmosfear — and a walk-through outdoor haunted experience with traditional Halloween décor.

Guests will also be allowed to wear costumes at the PNE for the first time, although the only masks permitted are the ones to cover mouths and contain droplets to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“Although it is not possible to host our traditional Fright Nights, we have a new haunting experience and chilling décor for our young adult Fright Night fans and this year we will have a separate experience on-site aimed at children and parents who are limited in their trick-or-treat options due to the pandemic,” says Shelly Frost, PNE president.

As of Oct. 9, Playland at the PNE will be transformed into “Slayland – Night of a Thousand Screams.” It will be open Oct. 9, 11, 16, 18, 22, 25, 29 and 31, from 6-11 p.m.

“Slayland is the first time in the PNE Halloween event history that guests will be allowed to wear costumes,” says a release. “There will be themes for costumes each weekend, from retro to superheroes. While costumes are allowed, please note that face paint and costume masks are not allowed, and COVID-19 masks will continue to be required in all queues and while on attractions.”

Since there will be no haunted houses, this is also the first time that children under 13 will be allowed, based on parental discretion. The PNE recommends children under the age of eight not visit the Halloween events.

A drive-through event is also in the works for Oct. 30 (4-8 p.m.) and 31 (11 a.m. to 8 p.m.) at the PNE, featuring trick-or-treat bags filled with candy apples, popcorn, cotton candy, and mini donuts.
