Woman dead in Surrey stabbing that also left child, man seriously hurt

Police believe it is a case of family violence. A woman is dead. Also, a man and a two-year-old child have been seriously injured inside a Surrey townhouse. As Greg Harper explains, one man is in custody while investigators search for answers.

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A woman is dead and a two-year-old child is seriously hurt, but expected to survive, after a stabbing in Surrey Tuesday night.

Mounties say a man also sustained serious injuries.

Officers were called to a townhouse complex in the Newton area of 66th Avenue and 127th Street just before 9 p.m. for reports of a stabbing inside one of the units.

The woman was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, but later died at the hospital.

A suspect was found near the home and was arrested. He remains in custody, the RCMP says.

“The indications are that this is an incident of family violence, and that the parties are known to one another,” Cpl. Elenore Sturko tells NEWS 1130, adding few other details can be shared at this time.

“When violent incidents happen, the public wants to know whether or not they’re at risk, what’s happened. This is an incident of family violence — it is very concerning and upsetting for the community, but we have an individual in custody right now and we’re not seeking any other suspects at this time,” Sturko says.

The townhouse complex remained behind police tape Wednesday morning. It is just one of two crime scenes, with another just down the street where a knife was reportedly found.

There’s still no word on a possible motive.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been called in to work with the Surrey RCMP.

The Surrey RCMP has yet to confirm any details.
