Battleground Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Here’s what you need to know about the Surrey ridings ahead of the polls closing on Saturday:

Viewed by many as the part of the province where this election could be won or lost, we’ve seen politicians prioritize Surrey when making election promises, both in this election and previous votes.

Perhaps the most notable related to this campaign is the BC Liberal pledge to hold a referendum on Surrey’s plan to ditch the RCMP and create its own municipal force.

Whether that holds the same appeal to voters as the NDP’s move last election to remove tolls on the Port Mann bridge remains to be seen.

In all, there are nine Surrey-area ridings where candidates are competing for your vote. Historically, the NDP and BC Liberals have been the dominant parties in this municipality.

Based on previous election results, the BC Liberals are typically strong in the southern part of the city, where they, generally, comfortably win Surrey-White Rock and Surrey South.

When we look north at Surrey-Green Timbers, Surrey-Whalley, Surrey-Fleetwood, plus Surrey-Newton, it’s a different story, with those ridings tending to favour the NDP historically.

Interestingly enough, the centre of the municipality is expected to be more of an open competition, with Surrey-Cloverdale, Surrey-Panorama, and Surrey-Guildford all in play.

Given how tight this election could be, how Surrey votes could have major implications for which party forms government.
