COVID-19 graffiti sprayed on Kelowna city hall

KELOWNA (NEWS 1130) — At least two sides of the city hall building in Kelowna have been vandalized with graffiti messages about COVID-19.

The text, sprayed in black paint, claims the pandemic is not real and the measures taken to stop its spread are not worth the perceived economic consequences.

The city has notified RCMP in Kelowna. The vandalism happened sometime late Monday or early Tuesday.

“We recognize that we live in a democracy and people are free to express their opinions, however, when tagging occurs without the permission of the property owner, it is an act of vandalism,” Colleen Cornock, crime prevention supervisor for the city, says in an email.

“Incidents of socio/political vandalism are not common in our community. But as is the case with other forms of graffiti tagging, when they do occur, incidents are addressed by graffiti abatement staff.”

City staff will clean up the messages, Cornock added.
