Royal Canadian Legion launching annual poppy campaign Friday

The Royal Canadian Legion’s annual poppy campaign, which launched on Friday, will see more than 200 new electronic donation boxes rolled out ahead of Remembrance Day.

The legion says this year’s campaign has been adjusted for the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning most branches will not set up donation tables or place volunteers at store entrances.

“It’s called Pay Tribute, and what that is is it’s a way for people to donate through tap and pay. I’m going to have some Pay Tribute boxes in 250 locations this year, and if it goes well, then that will increase in following years,” Nujma Bond, with the legion, explains.

Canadians will be able to make a $2 donation by tapping their credit or debit cards, or smartphones at these electronic boxes.

The legion notes there will still be about 25,000 traditional donation boxes set up across Canada where people will be able to drop off coins in addition to the 250 touchless electronic ones.

Donations can also be made on the Royal Canadian Legion’s website, where you’ll be able to buy merchandise from its poppy store, which includes the popular face masks featuring maple leaves and, of course, the poppy.

“They were designed by some designers here at the national headquarters and they have a red background, and the maple leaf, and the legion logo. They’re also made in Canada,” Bond adds.

All funds raised go towards supporting Canadian veterans and their families.
