West Coast Express celebrates 25 years of service

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Sunday marks 25 years since the West Coast Express has been shuttling commuters in Metro Vancouver.

Since 1995, the commuter train has carried about 45 million people from downtown Vancouver all the way to Mission.

Gabrielle Price with TransLink says when the West Coast Express first opened, it carried about 5,000 passengers a day. Now, it’s roughly 12,000.

“We’ve enjoyed serving customers for 25 years and we look forward to serving them for 25 more,” she says.

In 2019 alone, the West Coast Express served more than 2.7 million customers.

While COVID-19 has reduced ridership during the pandemic, Price says the company looks forward to welcoming back commuters as they return to their normal routines.
