VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — With Remembrance Day ceremonies looking a little different this year due to the pandemic, a virtual ‘Remembrance Island’ in the video game Fortnite is giving young people the chance to pay their respects.

After proving successful last year, Remembrance Island gives players the chance to explore key battlegrounds from the first and second world wars, Afghanistan, and also the Vimy Ridge Memorial.

Freeman Chute, national program officer at the Royal Canadian Legion, explains the purpose of the in-game island is to show why Canadians participate in remembering all those who served or fought in the wars.

“It was created to provide education to the younger personnel to show them what Canadians went through during those times,” he says.

Chute adds there will be no fighting of any kind on the island.

A moment of silence will be held in the game at 11:00 a.m. on Remembrance Day and players are encouraged to use their “salute” emote while visiting the virtual Vimy Ridge.
