Arianne Dieleman is collecting signatures to add a crosswalk on what some consider to be a dangerous road

DELTA (NEWS 1130) — A big effort from a young girl in Delta could see a new crosswalk put in at what some consider to be a dangerous road.

Six-year-old Arianne Dieleman was crossing Central Avenue near Lions Park with her siblings to get to school and her brother was almost hit by a car.

And after the scary close call, Arianne wanted to find out how she could make a difference.

So, she asked her grandma, “How I can get a crosswalk there?”

“And she said, ‘a petition.’ and I decided to start doing a petition,” Arianne explains.

So she got to work.

She went door to door to collect signatures, managing to get 30 of them.

Her mom, Carmelle, says she was not surprised by her daughter’s determination since she’s always had high spirits.

And Carmelle adds it turns out lots of people shared Arianne’s concerns.

“A lot of them have their own stories of close calls on that corner … They weren’t just signing it because she showed up at their door but because they actually believed in it as well.”

Carmelle says Delta Council is now studying that area, adding she’s proud of what her daughter has accomplished so far.

As for Arianne, she says this has been a positive experience.

“I’ve been feeling happy about doing it,” she says. “I like to keep people safe.”
