BC SPCA issues warning after cat dies following botched at-home neutering

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The BC SPCA is warning the public not to conduct home neutering for animals after taking care of two cats that endured “horrific” wounds.

Earlier this month, two male cats were brought into the SPCA in Vancouver for care, where one died from its injuries.

“Someone had tried to do a home neuter and tied the genitals with elastic bands. The wounds on both cats were horrific,” Jodi Dunlop, manager of the BC SPCA in Vancouver, says.

The surviving cat, named Geiger by staff, underwent surgery and recovered swiftly.

The SPCA says this case is a reminder that “home neutering should never be an option when it comes caring for your pet.”

“Animals like Geiger was a victim of needless pain. His life-saving surgery was only possible because of donations towards emergency care.”

The SPCA is also reminding pet owners that financial assistance is available in the province if needed.

“This is the third home neuter that we have seen in two weeks. We’d like to remind the public that this is a surgery that can only be done by a specialist,” Dunlop adds.
