Last day of Movember, donations to fund global prostate cancer registry

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Those fuzzy upper lips you’ve been seeing around the office will soon be clean-shaven once again. Today is the last day of Movember and organizers want to remind you where those moustache dollars go.

“Right now, we run a number of different cancer patient registries around the world and we’re about to embark on what we’re calling a super-registry,” explains Todd Minerson, country director for Movember Canada. “[It’s] going to bring all of that data, all of that information, so physicians can offer better choices, more informed choices, and better treatment solutions for men who are living with prostate cancer around the world.”

“So that’s every single test result, every single doctor’s appointment, every single prescription, every single evaluation they’ve done. And what it does is it helps us put all that data into one place.”

Right now, the registry contains data from 130,000 patients. Minerson hopes to grow that number even further. “We’re aiming to try to get 250,000 patients registered over the next five years. And the cumulative effect of that is positive not only on treatment decisions and treatment information, but on research directions and strategies as well.”

As for the COVID-19 pandemic hurting fundraising efforts, Minerson says that has not been the case at all. “COVID has not got in the way of our Movember communities. They’re they’ve shown up for mental health in a huge way. We have almost 67,000 people registered across the country to participate in Movember this year,” he points out. “Our community is been creative, they’ve been passionate, and they’ve been dedicated. They have not let this pandemic slow them down in demonstrating their care for mental health and we couldn’t be more grateful for it.”
