Man dies, another hurt in illegal suite fire in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A fire in an illegal suite in Vancouver has taken the life of one man and seriously hurt another.

The fire broke out around 9 p.m. Monday night at a commercial building on Kingsway near Boundary, according to Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services.

Police had noticed the smoke and flames and called the fire department. Officers had tried to get into the building, but were pushed back by the fire.

Inside, firefighters found the body of a man between the ages of 30 and 40 years, while another man was taken to hospital with significant injuries.

The illegal suite didn’t have sprinklers or smoke alarms, and fire investigators say smoking caused the fire.

“This tragic loss is a reminder for everyone to ensure they have working smoke alarms. Fire Code requires one per occupancy, however, one on every floor or one outside each room where someone sleeps is ideal,” says Capt. Jonathan Gormick. “Smoking is a leading cause of fire fatalities; ensure any smoking material is fully extinguished and disposed of in an appropriate container.”
