Would-be snowboarder caught breaking quarantine rules, fined by West Vancouver police

LIONS BAY (NEWS 1130) — A would-be quarantine-breaking snowboarder found himself spun around and sent home by police after being pulled over on the Sea to Sky highway this week.

West Vancouver Traffic Police stopped an Audi S4 with California license plates displaying expired insurance decals, on Monday afternoon, south of Lions Bay, the department says.

Reports indicate the North Vancouver man lied, at first, to officers, saying he’d renewed his work permit and returned to Canada “around two weeks ago.”

A quick call to the Canada Border Services Agency, however, revealed the man was supposed to be quarantined for another 48 hours after arriving from California, when he was caught making his way to Whistler to go snowboarding.

NEWS 1130 has requested more information from West Vancouver police.

Dr. Bonnie Henry has asked all British Columbians to avoid non-essential travel and recreate in their own communities.

Canada brought in the mandatory 14 day quarantine rule under the Quarantine Act in the spring amid the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other travel restrictions implemented amid the health crisis include the closure of the Canada-U.S. land border, restrictions on arrivals of foreign nationals, and other province-specific measures.
