B.C. reports deadliest COVID-19 day with 28 deaths

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Twenty-eight British Columbians lost their lives to COVID-19 in a single day.

During Thursday’s provincial update, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry called it one of the most “tragic days,” of the pandemic. She explained all but two of the people who died were residents in long-term care

“These are friends. These are people who have interesting and challenging lives and have had spent these last 10 months dealing with the challenges that we are all facing with this pandemic,” she said.

Residents in long-term care will be one of the first groups to receive the COVID-19 vaccine when possible.

Another 723 infections were also reported as the province surpassed 40,000 confirmed cases.

The number of patients in hospital because of the virus remains high at 346. Eighty-three people are in critical care. However, for the second time this week, there weren’t any new outbreaks in health-care facilities.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Adrian Dix also touched on the fact that fake text messages going out to people about positive COVID-19 tests.

“This is happening worldwide, and [is] not unique to B.C. If you are not tested, the message is obviously fake. If you have a positive test result you will be contacted by public health,” he said.
