19-year-old man killed in possible targeted shooting in East Vancouver: VPD

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A 19-year-old man in East Vancouver was shot to death Friday evening.

Around 8 p.m. Vancouver Police responded to reports of gunshots near East 5th Avenue and Cassiar Street.

When VPD arrived at the scene, Amar Najat Jalal was found in the middle of the intersection suffering from gunshot wounds.

Attempts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

“A grey pick up truck was found fully engulfed in flames in the north lane of East 5th Avenue, just around the corner from where the victim’s body was found,” Cst. Tania Visintin with the VPD says. “Preliminary evidence indicates this vehicle could be connected to the shooting.”

The VPD is not offering a possible motive for Jalal’s murder at this time but do say the shooting appears to be targeted.

This is the 18th homicide of 2020.

Anyone with information or anyone who has dashcam footage of the area between 7 and 9 p.m. on Friday is asked to call VPD Homicide detectives at 604-717-2500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
