Woman dies after being hit by empty cargo truck in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — A woman is dead after she was hit by an empty cargo truck in Surrey Tuesday afternoon.

Reports suggest she was walking with her children when the truck rolled into traffic and then onto the sidewalk.

The incident happened near 144th Street and 61A  Avenue, according to the Surrey RCMP.

Corporal Joanie Sidhu says the truck was likely being used for deliveries, and police are now trying to figure out what caused this to happen.

“This is very unusual, and tragic, especially considering how close it is to Christmas,” she says.

Police aren’t releasing any more information about the woman, but do say the driver associated with the truck stayed on scene and is cooperating with police.

The BC Coroners Service has been engaged and is conducting a separate investigation. Sidhu adds WorkSafe may be involved as well.

Anyone with more information about this incident or dash-cam footage is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers if you wish to remain anonymous at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.
