Three kittens abandoned at BC SPCA in freezer bag

By

Three tiny kittens are lucky to be alive after being abandoned outside of the BC SPCA in a zipped up freezer bag.

The organization says it’s not unusual for staff to find bags outside of the shelter’s door when they arrive in the morning, since people often drop off donations of blankets and food after hours.

But this was different.

“As the bag was picked up, the tiniest of mews could be heard coming from inside. Staff unzipped the bag a little to make sure air was getting in, then rushed inside to open the bag safely,” reads a Facebook post.

“When the bag was unzipped further, a waft of hot air came out – it was clear that the three small kittens, who were at most 6 weeks old, could easily have suffocated.”

Arriving at the shelter in the early morning, we thought it was a day like any other when we found a zipped freezer bag…

The kittens were scared, and lethargic but survived the ordeal.

“Clearly a little shaken up and surprised at their new environment, these beauties were scared and reluctant to come out of the freezer bag they had been trapped in for an unknown amount of time,” the post continues.”

“Thankfully there was just enough oxygen getting in through the tight zipper to keep them alive, but this was so dangerous and unnecessary.”

Noting that abandoning animals is illegal, the SPCA says the surrender fee it charges is optional in order to make it easy and accessible to turn an animal over to the care of a shelter.

The charity is appealing for donations Sunday, and every dollar received up to $12,000 will be matched.

These little babies survived thanks to people like you that care and know in their hearts that no animal, let alone defenseless babies, should ever be left alone without access to food, water, safety, and love,” the Facebook post ends.
