VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A 78-year-old man who was hit by an SUV while walking with his wife on a Vancouver sidewalk Friday has died from his injuries, according to police.

The man passed away Sunday, his wife suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive.

The couple were struck just after noon, around Broadway and Yukon Street, when a Fiat crashed into a Ford Explorer, sending it careening into parked cars and onto the sidewalk.

“This incident is truly a tragedy, and for it to happen just a week before Christmas is heartbreaking,” writes Sgt. Steve Addison in a release Sunday. “We’re asking for witnesses to come forward and speak to police so we can begin to provide answers to everyone involved.”

Police say the drivers of both vehicles were not injured, and that speed and alcohol have been ruled out as causes.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is being asked to contact VPD’s Collision Investigation Unit at 604-717-3012.
