6 people in Pitt Meadows displaced after large Christmas morning fire at workshop

PITT MEADOWS (NEWS 1130) – A massive fire in Pitt Meadows has displaced as many as six people on Christmas morning.

Deputy Chief David Biggin with Pitt Meadows Fire and Rescue says, it took a team of 23 firefighters over four hours to knock down the blaze, which was consumed a barn.

He says it looks like the barn was being used as a workshop.

“When I arrived at the scene a good 50 per cent of the building — which was barn that had been converted into a commercial workshop — was pretty much involved in fire. And the fire was working its way through the barn,” Biggin explains.

“There were multiple witnesses on scene that said that it was a workshop it had propane balls, oxy-acetylene, that it was vacant there’s nobody on there. So that determined our actions from there.”

The workshop fire spread to occupied trailers and a house on the property — but everyone made it out safely. Those displaced will be put up by emergency health services until hydro is restored.

A key challenge to this fire was getting access to a hydrant which was far down Lougheed highway and the workshop was in the back of the property.

Biggins said due to all the stuff in the workshop — it will be hard to investigate — although he doesn’t believe the fire is suspicious.
