B.C. mountains at high risk for avalanches this weekend

Avalanche Canada has raised the avalanche risk to “considerable” and “high” at several mountains around B.C. Kier Junos reports on the heightened dangers for skiers and other winter sports in the province’s backcountry.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A new warning to be very cautious or just outright avoid the backcountry this weekend here in B.C. as avalanche activity is expected.

Ilya Storm with Avalanche BC says the forecast is high this weekend with an elevated risk for avalanche hazard primarily in the South Coast of B.C., the Northwest Coast and the Sea to Sky.

“We are recommending that if you are travelling in the mountains — if you have the training, if you have the knowledge to be able to recognize an outlet, to recognize avalanche terrain — then avoid avalanche terrain, simple terrains, low angle slopes, make sure there’s no hazard above you,” she says.

Storm adds that if you don’t have the training, it’s best to avoid the backcountry this weekend.

“It is a time throughout the province to be cautious, to get the latest information and to plan your trips accordingly — which right now means a pretty conservative approach to going into the mountains.”
