BURNABY (NEWS 1130) — A dog who showed up at the Burnaby RCMP detachment just after midnight on New Year’s still needs to be reunited with her owner.
The lost pup — a Samoyed the Mounties have now named Snow — spent the weekend at the station, but has now been taken to the SPCA.
According to Cpl. Mike Kalanj the dog was found in the first moments of 2021.
“One of our members was out front and found this dog kind of wandering around. He couldn’t locate any owners anywhere in the area so he brought it inside,” he says.
“When she first showed up at the detachment she was very scared, as you can imagine, cold and scared. This is unusual, based on where our detachment is, there’s not a ton of residents around. Maybe, this dog had an instinct and made her way to us, feeling like she’d be safe.”
Once inside, it didn’t take long for the dog to warm up.
“She lightened up because we have a lot of animal owners in our detachment. So the officers were taking turns, taking her for walks throughout the night. She wasn’t just getting care during the day she got to go for walks at night, They were all feeding her,” Kalanj says.
A tweet the next morning got a lot of traction, but by Sunday no one had come forward to claim the dog.
Do you know me? This poor girl has somehow made her way to our detachment at Deer Lake in #burnaby. As much as we enjoy her, we wish to reunite her with her family. Come with proof of ownership… Otherwise we’ll never give her up! pic.twitter.com/leLtepaPf5

The dog does have a collar, and Mounties are hopeful the SPCA will be able to reunite her with her humans.
“We’re confident — cautiously confident — that they’ll be able to locate their family, based on she had a collar,” Kalanj explains.
“We look forward to hopefully finding out that she’s back with family and maybe finding out her name and having her visit us again.”
Snow is now with @BC_SPCA
We think they have a great chance of locating her family in the coming days.
Maybe tomorrow she’ll be with family, until tomorrow we’ll have to wait and see.
We’ll try to keep you informed.

This dog does have a collar, but the phone number is to a business that is closed until Monday.
My number one piece of advice is to make sure that there’s some something on your dog’s collar that could that can lead them back to you,” Kalanj says.
