BC Ferries cancels majority of Tuesday’s sailings on major routes

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Due to “an extreme weather system” BC Ferries has cancelled almost all afternoon and evening sailings to and from Vancouver Island on Tuesday.

A travel advisory says strong winds are expected to batter the region starting late in the morning, so a few early sailings are still slated to run as scheduled.

“Strong southeasterly winds of 70 to 90 km/h winds expected Tuesday as the approaching frontal system will spread very strong winds to Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast Tuesday. Winds will rise late Tuesday morning and persist into Tuesday evening,” it reads.

Anyone with a reservation on a cancelled sailing will receive a notification and an automatic refund.

Passengers are being urged to check the BC Ferries website for updates. 

The cancelled sailings are as follows:

Vancouver (Tsawwassen) – Victoria (Swartz Bay)
11:00 a.m. departing both directions – cancelled
1:00 p.m. departing both directions – cancelled
3:00 p.m. departing both directions – cancelled
5:00 p.m. departing both directions – cancelled

Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) – Nanaimo (Departure Bay)
10:40 a.m. departing both directions – cancelled
1:00 p.m. departing both directions – cancelled
3:20 p.m. departing Departure Bay – cancelled
3:45 p.m. departing Horseshoe Bay – cancelled
5:55 p.m. departing both directions – cancelled

Vancouver (Tsawwassen) – Nanaimo (Duke Point)
10:15 a.m. departing Duke Point – running as scheduled
10:15 a.m. departing Tsawwassen – cancelled
12:45 p.m. departing Duke Point – cancelled
