Highway 1 crashes cleared, backups remain for Ironworkers into North Vancouver

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Make sure to give yourself extra time if you need to get across the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge into North Vancouver this morning.

Two crashes that shut down a portion of Highway 1 Friday have now been cleared and the road has reopened. One of the two crashes involved a semi-truck and the resulting diesel spill forced further delays.

However, police say a sand truck has been able to take care of the slick and dangerous conditions, allowing the highway to reopen.

“The sand truck got there faster than expected and the highway is now open,” a tweet from North Vancouver RCMP reads. “Congestion is still heavy so please be patient, show courtesy, and stay safe.”

Traffic was able to get over the bridge despite the crashes, with detours in place onto Dollarton Highway and then back onto the Upper Levels.

Highway 1 is now backed up well into Burnaby and is expected to remain heavy for some time as congestion clears.
