Suspected drunk driver knocks off fire hydrant, flooding two Burnaby homes

BURNABY (NEWS1130) — A torrent of water was let loose this morning after a suspected drunk driver broke off a fire hydrant at the intersection of Royal Oak and Marine Drive shortly after midnight Saturday.

Burnaby Fire tells NEWS 1130 multiple homes in the area were partially flooded as a result of the hydrant coming loose.

They stayed at the scene to slow the flow until city crews were able to cap the pipe.

Emergency crews got the call at 12:01 a.m. where they arrived to find a single minivan which hit the hydrant and the driver attempted to run off, Burnaby RCMP said in a tweet.

The man was quickly arrested and Mounties say they will recommend charges against the 61-year-old suspect who also hit multiple vehicles during the early morning mayhem.

Charges include Refusal to Provide Breath Sample and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

Luckily, no one was hurt as a result of the incident, although the extent of the flooding to homes is unclear at this point.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this case.

Traffic in the area is not affected by the collision and flooding.
