Rescue crews, RCMP respond to avalanche near Whistler

WHISTLER (NEWS 1130) — Mounties and rescue crews in Whistler are trying to account for everyone who was in the area where a size three avalanche struck Saturday.

In a tweet, Whistler RCMP say the avalanche occurred around 3:15 p.m. on Cowboy Ridge, a popular site for backcountry skiing south of Whistler.

Police are working to ensure they “have all parties who were in that area identified.” No one has been reported missing, but “Lots of resources” have been “activated.”

According to Avalanche Canada’s classification system, a size three avalanche “could bury a car, destroy a small building, or break trees.”
