Sea to Sky Gondola could reopen as early as late spring after cables were cut in September

SEA TO SKY (NEWS 1130) – The Sea to Sky Gondola is set to reopen in a few months after its cable line was deliberately cut for a second time.

In a statement on its website, operators of the gondola says orders have been placed for a new cable and 25 new cabins, and they hope to be up and running by late spring or early summer.

“The new cable is en route to Squamish while our cabin supplier, Swiss-based CWA, will be providing us with a timeline for delivery of the new cabins soon,” the statement reads, adding, “the complicated clean-up process has been completed.”

In addition to replacing the cable and cabins, operators say the rebuild effort includes “additional security measures that are extraordinary in the lift industry.” Operators say they’ve consulted with “world-renowned security industry professionals” to land on these new measures, of which details have not been disclosed.

Last September, the gondola’s cable line was cut by a vandal or vandals, sending dozens of cabins crashing to the ground. It came barely a year after the exact same thing happened for the first time.

No one has been arrested or charged in either incident. Operators are appealing to anyone who may have information about either case to contact the Police Gondola Information phone line at 604.892.6122 or by email at GONDOLA.INFO@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, Global BC reported gondola operators were suing their former insurance company for failing to provide adequate coverage.

The report suggests the insurance company is being accused of honouring only 70 per cent of a claim worth more than $11 million, which was filed in August 2019.
