Corrections Canada says it's to allow staff to do an 'exceptional search'

Video visits have been suspended during the search

MISSION (NEWS 1130) — Virtual visits at the medium-security unit at Mission Institution have been suspended as a lockdown and search at the federal prison continues.

Correctional Service Canada says the facility went under a lockdown Thursday afternoon to allow staff to carry out what’s being described as an “exceptional search.”

Corrections not revealing what exactly the search is for, other than to say it was ordered “to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates.”

It says normal operations will resume as soon as it’s considered “safe” to do so.

No other details are being released.

NEWS 1130 has reached out to Correctional Services Canada to ask if the lockdown has ended.
