New Westminster police ‘follow sounds of screaming’ to arrest man with knife

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – Charges have been approved after two men were reportedly chased down 8th Street in New Westminster last month by someone carrying a hunting knife.

Police say 9-1-1 calls began coming in around 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 21. According to a release, officers were able to find the suspect quickly by “following the sounds of screaming.”

The man was reportedly holding a 10-inch knife when he was found by police. He dropped it and was arrested “without incident.”

“These men did the right thing in calling 9-1-1,” says Sgt. Sanjay Kumar. “If you see someone with what you believe to be a weapon and their behaviour is making you fear for your safety, call us right away.”

The 39-year-old is facing two charges of assault with a weapon in connection with this incident.
