Sports fans placing bets ahead of Super Bowl Sunday

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Super Bowl Sunday is this weekend, and sports fans are already placing their bets for what oddsmakers are thinking could be a very close, nail-biting game.

This year, the Kansas City Chiefs are hoping for a repeat as champions, but they’ll have to get past Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers first. Although, Matt Lee with the B.C. Lottery Corporation says there are plenty of things to bet on, besides the game itself.

“The MVP of the Super Bowl game is always a popular one to bet on, but you know, we always see the novelty bets get some of that attention as well,” he says.

“The most popular novelty bet I’ve seen so far is the over-under on the national anthem. Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan [are] performing it this year. The over-under is just about two minutes long, so people obviously thinking, it could be either a really long anthem or a short one.”

Lee adds on playnow.com there is an opportunity to win $20,000 if you predict the outcomes of 14 different bets.

British Columbians wagered more than $500,000 in 25,000 Super Bowl-related bets, according to Lee.

“Super Bowl is probably again our most popular betting event every year. We’ve seen over the last three Super Bowls that there has been some record-breaking betting activity for a player’s on playing out calm,” he says.

This year, he’s expecting closer to 30,000 bets for a total nearing $700,000.
