Avalanche risk drops dramatically on South Coast

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – What a difference a few days make, when it comes to the avalanche danger in our area.

Last week, there were dire warnings being put out, with authorities warning of slides being imminent. Now, the danger is moderate to low.

Forecaster Ari Hanna with Avalanche Canada says a hardened snowpack, as well as the release of a lot of snow down the hills, has made things a lot less dangerous.

“It’s become a lot harder to trigger, but it’s still possible,” she said. “So, the hazard, at the moment, at upper elevations, is at moderate,” she said.

“We see a very little snow, very little wind, very little rise in temperatures,” she added.

Hanna says the colder temperatures this week are also going to help further solidify the snowpack, further decreasing the danger in the back-country.

She is reminding anyone who’s thinking of heading into the back country: “Get the training, get the gear, and get the forecast at Avalanche.ca.”
