Dog rescued by West Vancouver Fire crews in Cypress Falls Park

WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A dog is safe and back at home today thanks to the hard work of West Vancouver Fire crews.

The Rottweiler had to be rescued after getting into trouble at Cypress Falls Park. ‘Boss’ was out with his owners just before sunset on Monday when he took a big tumble.

“The dog was off leash and tumbled down the cliff face,” Assistant Chief Matt Furlot tells NEWS 1130.

He fell about 40 feet into Cypress Falls Creek, where the water is flowing quite high.

“We were racing against the clock. It was already starting to get dark,” Furlot explains, adding crews quickly got to work.

“It was going to be a high-angle rope rescue to get down to the area, and then it was a swift water rescue to actually rescue the dog that was stuck on a rock out in a pool on the river.”

Furlot notes it was quite a technical rescue, “probably one of the harder ones.”

He says the area the dog fell in is quite narrow and commends Boss’ owners for calling for help — rather than trying to go it alone.

“They did the right thing … they didn’t try to retrieve the dog themselves and put themselves in further danger,” Furlot adds.

The 85-pound dog wasn’t hurt. While he was able to scramble up onto a rock from the frigid, rushing waters, Furlot notes Boss was still in danger and that time was of the essence.

“Crews were happy to see the dog was friendly,” Furlot says with a chuckle.

West Vancouver Fire is urging people to call for help when it’s needed and to not put themselves in harm’s way — no matter the circumstance.
