Be prepared, says BC Hydro after several outages in frigid temperatures

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Quite a few people found themselves without power Thursday morning, particularly in parts of the Fraser Valley, so BC Hydro is taking a moment to remind you to be prepared.

In some of those areas, the temperature dropped to -24°C.

Mora Scott with Hydro says crews have been working around the clock to keep the lights and heat on. However, conditions are fairly unpredictable so Scott is urging people to ensure they are prepared.

“We encourage customers to have an emergency kit with things like food, water, flashlight, extra batteries, as well as a First Aid kit,” she said.

Scott notes there is more demand for electricity during these cold snaps.

“It’s primarily due to the colder weather and the shorter, darker days. Generally, at BC Hydro we see the highest demand for electricity between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on weekday evenings. That’s really the time when people are turning up the heat, doing their laundry and making dinner and switching on the TV after work.”

She adds crews have prepared as best as they can to keep the power on.

“At BC Hydro, we definitely have more than enough power to serve this demand, so there won’t be any outages related to the people using more power over the next few days with the cold weather,” she said
