Road crews keeping ahead of snow on major arteries in Lower Mainland

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Mainroad Contracting, which is in charge of keeping the major routes throughout the Lower Mainland clear, says roads are “so far, so good,” as crews have been able to keep ahead of much of the snow.

Lower Mainland General Manager Darren Ell says crews have been active since mid-evening Friday, clearing the highways, while also salting and sanding.

He says crews will remain active throughout the weekend.

“What we’re doing now to prevent any more accumulation on the roadways, is plowing the snow off work from left to right. And as we’re doing that, we’re applying salt where we need to and that’s helping break up whatever’s left and it’s preventing the bonding of additional snow,” he explains.

Ell adds they’re also keeping tabs on the bridge decks’ conditions, but says they haven’t seen any issues thus far.

“We have extra trucks out there salting right now and they’re just really paying attention to make sure there’s no accumulations or minimal,” he says.

Ell is also asking drivers to slow down, drive to the conditions and advise motorists to keep off the roads if possible.

“If you don’t have to drive in the winter conditions then don’t. Stay away. Let the trucks do their job. They’ll plow the roads as fast as they can to make the roads as safe as possible. If you need to go out, just look at DriveBC for further road updates.”
