B.C. records 559 new COVID-19 cases, zero in long-term care

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There are some small victories being celebrated by B.C.’s top doctor Tuesday, as she says no deaths or cases of COVID-19 were recorded in long-term care homes in the last 24 hours.

Dr. Bonnie Henry says this is a testament to the success of vaccines, particularly in those spaces.

“This really is a reflection of the vaccines that we have had and their use and deployment to long-term care and assisted living across this province. It really is remarkable,” she said.

The province says more than 224,000 doses have been given in B.C. so far. Of those, about 59,000 are second doses. Henry notes most of those who have received the vaccines are in long-term care.

“We saw some of that data presented last week by the BCCDC, that has shown the vaccine effectiveness after a single dose in residents of long-term care and in health care workers who have received that vaccine is upwards of 80 per cent within two to three weeks of receiving the vaccine,” Henry said.

Henry says over the next two weeks, people older than 80 in the general population will be contacted about registering to receive the vaccine, if they so choose with more details coming Monday.

“Nobody will be left behind,” she promised.

Henry also encourages British Columbians to continue to follow public health guidelines and that we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

“In the coming months we are going to be able to do all those things we have been missing for the last year and by the time we get to the summer, we are going to be in a different place,” she reassured.

There was one death in the last day, and 559 more people in this province have tested positive for the virus.
